Ghost Block Estate, Oakville, Napa Valley, CA 2021
96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot
Dark, seductive, and impeccably balanced – Ghost Block 2021 weaves together lush blackberry and ripe plum with hints of violet, dark chocolate, vanilla, and warm spice. Silky tannins frame a velvety mid-palate, leading into a precise, lingering finish. Beautifully structured and layered, it’s a perfect match for grilled lamb chops or other rich, savory dishes.
The story behind the name:
Ghost Block Estate is more than just a wine – it’s a Napa Valley legend. The family’s roots run deep: over 120 years and five generations of the Pelissa family have farmed this land, beginning in 1877 when the estate became the ninth bonded winery in California. Today, they produce three labels: Elizabeth Rose, Oakville Winery, and the flagship Ghost Block.
The Ghost Block name was born in the early 1980s when young Andy Hoxsey, after a day working his grandfather’s vineyards, stopped for a beer at Pancha’s bar. There, a slightly inebriated veteran told him he’d once seen a ghost emerge from the Yountville cemetery and walk straight through the vineyard – the spirit, he claimed, of George C. Yount, the founder of the town and the man who planted Napa’s first vines in 1839.
The tale stuck. By the next morning, Andy had trademarked “Ghost Block.” The wine has carried the legend ever since – a tribute to the land, the vine, and perhaps the watchful ghost who guards them both.
